Dr. H. Dean Mathis and his wife of 50 years, Betty Sue, have lived in the Lansing area for the last 5 years, moving here from New Mexico.  They have 2 children and 15 grandchildren.  Dean began serving Cedar Street Church as Transitional Pastor on September 10th, 2017.  Dean is also Director of Capitol Ministries – Michigan. Dr. H. Dean Mathis was born to Christian parents and saved by grace through faith in Christ at the age of 10. During his teen years Dean experienced an undeniable call from God into ministry which became focused on becoming equipped to be a pastor during his college years.

Dr. Mathis held the position of Senior Pastor of Taylor Memorial Baptist Church in Hobbs, New Mexico from 1975-2011, and was designated Pastor Emeritus in January, 2012.  The church grew from just under 700 members in 1975 to over 1,800 members in 2011. Over the decades, a steady stream of young adults from the church have pursued Christian ministry as a calling and vocation in the United States and abroad.

  • Chairman of the Christian Life Committee of the BCNM for three years
  • Southern Baptist Convention’s Committee on Boards, 1979
  • Trustee of the Baptist Sunday School Board (now Lifeway), 1982-1990
  • Active member and twice Moderator of the Southwestern Baptist Association 

Publications and Media:

  • Wrote Bible background material for children, youth, and adults for the Baptist Sunday School Board.
  • Authored a training manual for Keys to the Abundant Life featuring Bill Glass for UP INC.
